2018 will be the year of the foldable phone. Samsung’s Galaxy X foldable phone will be available in 2018, if the rumour mill and leaked info is correct, and this will either mean a tiny phone that folds out to a normal sized smart phone or a regular smart phone size that folds out to a tablet size. Apple is rumoured to be working on their own foldable phone however it is not expected for years.

What else can we expect in 2018?

More Intelligence: Artificial and otherwise

In 2018 we can expect to see Artificial Intelligence pervade just about everything. From business intelligence to recruiting staff. AI’s bread and butter in 2018 will be learning what is “Normal State” and “Not-Normal State” in datasets. One example of this is existing AI technology which can scour your raft of CV’s for you and provide a shortlist or check your own scouring for implicit or explicit bias. Technology like this will become ubiquitous for business and a surge towards this will occur in 2018.

Immersion: AR/VR

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality will be terms that “buzz” even more in 2018 as they go mainstream and also find their way into business in a larger way. One example of this technology in business will be VR and AR providing immersive ways to demonstrate virtual prototypes, mockups and designs to customers so that the customer can interact with these elements to an extent that has not been possible in the past.

Cloud to the Edge

As more Internet enabled (IoT) devices appear around business premises, factories and warehouses, the amount of data and processing required will provide context for compute power entering back into these locations. This hybrid cloud topology means that some processing is performed onsite (the edge) and all the data is aggregated in the centralised cloud.

Block-chain is the technology that allows distributed cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies aside, block-chain technology could provide distributed security authentication, identify management and settlements, to name a few. If you’re tired of hearing about Bitcoin, then buckle up because you’ll hear about it a lot more in 2018.

2018 will be an exciting time for technology and we look forward to working with you in 2018 as the technology landscape continues to evolve.
