Windows 7 and Server 2008 going ‘End of Support’. Are you Ready?

Microsoft keeps a fixed schedule for supporting their software products after release and Windows 7, Server 2008 and SQL 2008 are going into the ‘end of support’ state in January 2020. This gives you a little over a year to remove any of these products from your environment.

What does end of support mean for you?

When the date is reached Microsoft will no longer provide any technical assistance and, most importantly, no longer provide security updates. This means that if you continue to use any of these products after Jan 2020 then you may be exposed to security vulnerabilities which could compromise your entire network, including newer operating systems. For instance, if ransomware can infect a Windows 7 machine through an unpatched security vulnerability then the ransomware may be able to encrypt all the data on your servers, even if the servers are brand new Server 2016 servers.

What should you do before Jan 2020?

Especially since the advent of the National Mandatory Data Breach reporting legislation earlier this year, it is essential that any security holes in your organisation are closed to prevent beaches. Windows 7 workstations and laptops should be transitioned to Windows 10 over the next year, larger deployments should be commenced sooner than later. Server migrations can be a little more complicated and require more planning. If you are still using SQL 2008 or Windows Server 2008 then consideration will have to be given to compatibility for your applications with the newer versions of Server and SQL, and a migration plan architected. It is best to get this process underway with as much time to spare between now and Jan 2020.
